Officials from Chevrolet and Indianapolis Motor Speedway unveiled the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS Indianapolis 500 pace car at the Speedway’s Hall of Fame Museum today.

“We’ve enjoyed a great partnership with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway throughout the years, and are proud to once again have the privilege of pacing the Indianapolis 500 in a Camaro,” said Jim Campbell, General Manager, Chevrolet.

The 2010 Chevy Camaro Indianapolis 500 pace car is a 21st century sports car that looks to the future with a nod to both the car’s and the race’s heritage. The first year for Camaro to pace the Indianapolis 500 was in 1967, the year the Camaro made its debut. Camaro has since paced the race in 1969, 1982, 1993 and 2009.

This year’s pace car features an Inferno Orange Metallic paint scheme with White Diamond rally stripes that travel from the front to the rear over the top of the body, as well as extending to the instrument panel. The design is a modern interpretation of the original rally stripe that debuted on the 1969 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car.

“Chevrolet has done it again with the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS Pace Car, it is simply beautiful,” said Jeff Belskus, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation. “The car’s tribute to ‘500’ history and its sports car feel will be a big hit with our fans, and it will look great leading the Indianapolis 500 field on Race Day.”

This year’s pace car is equipped with a stock 400 hp 6.2L V-8, an RS appearance package and leather interior with Inferno Orange interior accents. The pace car also features unique design cues that further enhance the Camaro’s head-turning design. Features unique to the pace car include:

*2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo painted on doors and embroidered on driver and passenger headrests
*2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo badges on front fenders
*All-new front grille insert that Chevrolet plans to offer as a future Camaro accessory
*Amber lens tail lamps
*Complete safety strobe light system with custom interior light bar in the rear window (no rooftop light bar)
*All-new GM Accessory floor mats with red and orange accent stitching

Starting at approximately $23,000, and offering an EPA-estimated 29 highway mpg on the V-6-powered car, the all-new Camaro is a budget-friendly sports car that doesn’t sacrifice on performance. Despite the recent economic challenges, the Camaro has overtaken its closest competitor to lead the regular sports car segment in sales for the last six months. Chevrolet sold more than 6,000 Camaros in each of these months.

The public will get their first look at the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS Indianapolis 500 pace car when it makes its auto show debut at the Indianapolis Auto Show starting on Dec. 26.

Chevrolet is one of America’s best-known and best-selling automotive brands, and one of the fastest-growing brands in the world. With fuel solutions that range from “gas-friendly to gas-free,” Chevrolet has nine models that offer an EPA-estimated 30 miles per gallon or more on the highway, and offers two hybrid models. More than 2.5 million Chevrolets that run on E85 biofuel have been sold. More information can be found at www.chevrolet.com.

Established in 1909, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has long prevailed as an icon of motorsports excellence. The 2009 racing season marked the 100th anniversary of the Speedway and the start of its Centennial Era, which continues with the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race in 2011.

For 2010, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will play host to the Indianapolis 500 on May 30, the Brickyard 400 on July 25 and the Red Bull Indianapolis GP on Aug. 29. For tickets and information, visit www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com.

Chevrolet’s 2010 Camaro has only been out for a few months – and already we are shocked (yet, not surprised) by various reports of smashed and totaled Camaro’s. There’s a great line from the Transporter film series (I said great line, not great movies) where Jason Statham states “you’re only as good as the car you drive” – I look at it as “the car is only as good as its driver.” These car owners are sullying the name Chevy Camaro, which is something to be left for IROC!

Last week 2010′s Chevy Camaro received an unexpected four-star crash test rating for driver and passenger frontal collisions – while the sides and rear received five-stars. Not that you could tell, judging from this totaled Camaro SS, seen below. Apparently, the vehicle was “reduced to a pile of scrap by an uninsured unlicensed teenager in a Ford Escape.” – Though it’s not much worse then the front end of the above Black Camaro.

And of course when you rent a car you’re taking over for whatever abuse the last renter did – the above Avis Camaro rental went a little over on gunning-it, ending up with a ripped off bumper. That’s not nearly as sad as this Detroit car tester (below) – who left his 2010 Camaro unlocked one evening and woke up to find all 4 wheels stolen. Yes, we know it doesn’t matter if the car is locked or not to snag them rims, but the victim felt pointing that out helped his case.

Lastly, a recent Camaro buyer was so excited to get his new SS home he drove it off a lift, directly into his living room. The man was drunk, obviously, blowing three-times the legal limit. Although now would be a good time for him to start building a garage.

As Chevrolet Camaros line the docks of shipping ports along America’s coast line, many are asking if this rebirth of historic muscle cars (we leave out the Chevy IROC, mostly because of the anti-Italian translation of that particular abbreviation) will sail or sink through GM’s rough seas. Even more are wondering if buying a high powered automobile now is proper, for the sake of your bank account.

There is no doubt that now is the right time to buy American. And before we get off on the wrong foot with the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro, one should remember a base Camaro will only put you back $22,995 – not pocket change, but nothing near the price tag of some high performance German and Japanese vehicles. $22K will give the buyer a 3.6 liter V6 engine that produces 300 horsepower. This also isn’t the 1984 “I get 15 miles to the gallon” Camaro – 2009′s model ranges 27 mpg highway.

If you really want to blow your wallet load, a top of the line Camaro SS with manual transmission features a 6.2 liter LS3 V8 engine, producing 422 horse power. So, we ask you – can one car save an entire company from going under? It worked with Plymouth and their K back in the 80′s – but then again look where Plymouth is now.

Thanks to Camaro5 for these great spyshots!

Seriously, how many different concepts models does one car need – how about you just release it already!? Chevrolet announced several Camaro concepts and a cornucopia of accessories well before the final product hits stores. To add to the confusion, four more concept models were introduced at this year’s SEMA.

Here are the first concept photos released back in 2007 – from drawing board to showroom floor, but still these models were not yet sales person ready.

Pretty hot! Too bad the final product from Chevy was not as exciting, but still flashy. And with the array of accessories you can add to the car, including trim kits, wheel covers and engine power ups, you can pretty much build your own.

You can order your Camaro now, starting at an approximate MSRP of 22K (base price of course), and ready for a Spring 2009 delivery. Which will probably look something like this…at least as far as we know:

It has been too long since a Chevrolet Dealership (or a Chevy fan for that matter) has seen the Camaro. Well, 2010 will change all of this as GM rolls out a stylish new look for the classic American automobile. You’ve seen the drawings leaked online – now get ready to witness the Camaro Revolution. Scroll down for highly anticipated official Chevrolet Camaro pictures and read excerpts from their press release.

Following in the footsteps of retro-design taken by Chrysler/Dodge (with the Challenger) and Ford (Mustang) Chevy’s artists and mechanics have created a vehicle that is a pleasure to both admire and operate. Its looks combine both old school Camaro curves and the low, wide frame of a Corvette. Shoppers will be able to purchase a V6 or V8 SS version, pumping between 300 and 400 hp from her powerful engine. As Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper said in a July press release; “The new Camaro delivers the best of both worlds – great heritage and a thoroughly modern, advanced package of performance, comfort and technology…It’s a sports car for a new generation of enthusiasts that doesn’t forget the heritage that helped make the original a cultural icon.”

Inside, driver’s will find a throwback to classic Camaro interiors. – or “heritage-inspired” as Chevrolet is calling it. Many of your less-essential gauges will be mounted near the shifter – very snug between two bucket seats. “It is a car that competes with the best sports cars in its class, but does so with surprising efficiency. That is no small feat, and it took a worldwide commitment to achieve it.” Can’t wait to see how a worldwide audience welcomes this updated Camaro. Let’s hope there’s an IROC model in the works.

Sales of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will being in early 2009.
