Corvette Racing Takes Home ALMS Win
Corvette Racing has pulled off an amazing victory at one of the toughest races of the American Le Mans Series season, Petit Le Mans.
Oliver Gavin in the #4 Corvette Racing CR6 came within two corners of finishing second—not a bad showing, after 1000 miles of racing against the best GT teams in the world—when the GT2 class leading #62 Risi Ferrari driven by Toni Vilander, ran out of gas, letting Gavin by to take the team’s first GT2 win since Mosport in August, 2009.
The Corvette team calculated better on their final pit stops. The Risi technicians miscalculated their final fuel fill, getting the #62 Ferrari back on track ahead of Gavin’s Corvette, but with a few ounces to little in the tank.
Oliver Gavin said after the race that his fuel warning light was on for the last lap-and-a-half. He didn’t know if he was going to make it, and when he passed the Ferrari, he wasn’t sure if it was the leader or the 61 car. “I kept asking, was that the leader? Was that the leader? No one would answer me. In Turn One they came on the radio and said, ‘We won!
“[The win] means everything. It’s been a really rough year for us but finally we’ve got the victory that I think we all deserve. I want to thank everybody who supported us through the year and carried on believeing in us.”
Co-driver Jan Magnusson said, “The win was a huge surprise to everybody. We were expecting like everyone to settle for second.
“We know we did our best, but we know we have to go away and work a little more. One win in one year is for sure not enough for us. We were close so many times but made some mistakes so we’re happy it finally went our way today.”
